How Can You Help at Home?

  • Look over your child’s Daily Sentence Journal and Take-Home Folder nightly.

    • Any important messages will be written in their sentence journals, or sent home in their folders. Please initial or sign your child’s sentence journal each night as this will set up a communication routine between parent, child, and teacher.

    • Also read through the weekly parent newsletters sent home each Friday.

  • Read with your child everyday!
    • In the beginning you might be doing most of the reading, then the “magic” will happen and your child will start reading to you!
    • We will have classroom routines in place for your child to check out books from the classroom, and bring home paper books from our reading series to practice vocabulary words.
  • Help your child practice his/her sight words.
    • This will start the second week of school. The weekly words will be noted in the newsletter.
    • Try to practice in different ways each night so they truly know and can apply their spelling words.

  • Practice math skills.

    • Reviewing and practicing the skills taught in the classroom at home will help reinforce your child’s learning and mastering of each math skill.

  • Help your child reach independence by giving them responsibilities and choices at home.

    • Children in first grade are capable of thinking, choosing, and doing for themselves. Have your child help out by keeping their rooms clean, feeding the cat, setting the table, etc. Let them choose their outfit for the day, or whether they will read before or after supper (or both)!

  • Play board games together that help build oral vocabulary and thinking skills…monitor how much TV your child watches and what is watched.

  • Share your knowledge and time…Enjoy your child…they are truly a gift!!!

*** I will be sending more information and helpful hints during the year. Please remember, if you ever have questions or concerns feel free to contact me in whichever way is convenient for you. My main job is to make your child feel safe and secure while learning to be the best first grader they can be!

Thank you for sharing your child with me!
